The reason is that Betty Caithness is a left handed painter who crooks her arm elbow and hand as southpaws are known to do. This positioning obstructs and filters light in a peculiar fashion that is evidently not that apparent. The solution is for right handed painters to paint with their right elbow raised to 45 degrees, their arm at 90 degrees and their wrist and hand at 7 o clock .
