when the candles cost more than the cake

There’s nearly two centuries worth of talent represented on this cover! Well, about five months short anyway. Both subject and artist were born and also died the same year. Hope: “You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake… I’ll tell ya how to stay young: Hang around with older people.”

Master caricaturist Al Hirschfeld was a regular contributor to the golden age of TV GUIDE starting as a reviews illustrator in 1954, with his first cover commission in 1956. He was one of their stalwarts—along with the likes of Richard Amsel, Bernie Fuchs, Bob Peak, and Jack Davis—when it seemed nearly every other cover was a commissioned illustration. One accounting of Hirschfeld’s output has it tallied at 41 covers spanning 1956-1999, from the host of The $64,000 Question, Hal March, to the cast of Ally McBeal.
