greatness under the covers

by Art Chantry:

this is the single greatest magazine cover in the history of publishing. the next 4 greatest mag covers are (to round out the top 5, In this order): time’s “is god dead?” cover, life’s “manson” cover, esquire’s “ali” cover and rolling stone’s ” “john & yoko” cover. so, you see the competition for the top slot is mighty stiff. when to going gets tough, pull out a gun.

—everybody has additions and subtractions. a list of the best of the best can never be completed. it’s like ‘favorite record’.—AC

of course, when it conmes to this sort of thing, everybody has their own list, and no two of these lists are remotely similar. for instance, you may ask, “where’s mad or playboy or fortune or famous monsters on this list, eh?” but, even though the histories of these magazine’s covers are great and consistant, which one do you pick? it’s impossible to choose. so, i skipped them and went for the greatest hits.

as i understand it, nobody bought this issue of national lampoon. so, they shot the dog. the next issue had the poor beast depicted on the cover with his legs stuck up in the air – stone dead. don’t you feel guilty?
