for all you youngsters out there who are terrified by the right wing madness of this current election cycle, rest assured that none of this crackpot stuff and nonsense is at all new. that end of the political spectrum has always been there and always will be. there’s a reason the extreme right used to be referred to as “the lunatic fringe”.

i found this 1975 brochure in a file full of barry goldwater, john birch society, paranoid conspiracy materials in a file left behind by an old timer fringy pal of mine. as you can see, this is so fucking psycho nutbag, that it almost (emphasis on the ALMOST) makes the paranoid crazies today seem tame. if you really try to see the extreme right in a historical perspective, you quickly see they are no threat to “normal” america at all. only seasonal entertainment.
no matter how bad this election cycle is, no matter how afraid it makes you, no matter how deeply offended you may be, keep in mind there’s nothing new under the sun. american culture has a nifty way of turning even serial killers into ‘culture heroes’ so bland verging on pablum.
