WHEN SANTA COMES CALLING: Ask for I.D

Certificate of Origin. And proof of birth. And a valid driver’s license. And if the gifts were not made by slave and child labor.  A designated driver? Everyone wants a piece of Santa; to rub the belly that spits the golden coins.  His origins are simply too weird to sell soda pop and beer. But before he was sanitized and cleaned up… there was some doubt as to whether the Claus was really Claws. Ask him to take off his gloves as well….

The story begins in the northern regions of Europe where the supreme god Odin, also known as Wodan among the German tribes, reigned. Odin/Wodan was the god of wisdom, magick and occult knowledge, runes, poetry and war. His name means “the inspired one”. Like a shaman he could travel in other worlds to gather more insight while his two black ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory) kept him informed about the news in the world. Odin was depicted as a tall, old man with a white beard and wearing a cloak. He rode the skies and the seas on his fast white horse Sleipnir with his 8 (the number of transformation) legs, while carrying his never missing spear Gungnir (clear and focused intent) in his hand.

---Americans know the song - "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." But do they ever listen to the words ? The words reveal the secret past of Christmas that included "Krampus" - the Horned god of December 25th that punished children if they had been bad. Hence the warning - "You Better Not Pout - You Better Not Cry - - You Better Watch Out -- I'm Telling You Why --- and in the Old Days - the warning meant that when Santa came to give gifts to the good children, his evil helper - would give spankings and whippings to the bad kids - who had been naughty all year. Instead of teaching their children to fear God, or try to please him; - they directed their children to the pagan jolly god of santa - who gave "Material" rewards, and to an Evil - Devil type god - who punished spoiled, and rotten children. This alone, should alert all people to the fact that Christmas is and has - pagan and evil origins.---

He had one eye, for he had offered the other eye in exchange for gathering wisdom at the well of the head Mimir (Norse representation of the Source) and with that he became a shapeshifter, able of seeing in the outward world with his normal eye and understanding the inward worlds with his black, removed, eye.He was very beloved among his friends and followers who felt happy and energized in his surroundings (an enlightened being?). His enemies however he could paralyze or kill with his sight (insight, the truth). Odin trained many men and women as warriors for the final battle against the forces of destruction in the underworld at Ragnarok (the Norse judgement day). His fearless warriors often painted their bodies black and fought in the middle of the night.

---"In some parts of Austria, St Nicholas is accompanied by a horned monster. I n Styria, the dark companion is called Bartlel, and in lower Austria, he is called Krampus or Grampus. In Czechoslovakia, St Nicholas is accompanied by a fierce Devil." - St.Nicholas; School of the Seasons; by Waverly Fitzgerald---

The story of Odin/Wodan is the battle between good and evil which will stop when we finally realize that black and white are two sides of the same coin. Odin is a mythical representation of goodness with his wisdom, white beard and white horse (in New Age terms we would depict him as ‘white divine light’). And he is wise enough to understand that ‘black’ is not similar to ‘dark’ in the sense of ‘evil and taboo’ for his helpers are black ravens and black (spiritual) warriors. The evil he fights is the underworld dragon of false beliefs, untruth and selfishness (in New Age terms we would call this ‘ego’). Well thats point of view…

“In a season which doubles as both a sacred and holy time of contemplation and expectation of Christ’s coming and a very pagan and devil dominated time—both in tradition and in modern consumerism—I cannot help but see both the light and dark of this season and its’ traditions.

---Priest Jon Knudsen in the Charismatic Church linked to The Danish Mission Association, claims St. Claus is a demon, and leads people into paganism in regards to the festival of Christmas. This year, the Church hanged St. Claus, and put this message around his neck. “ We forsake the devil and all his evil deeds, and everything about him”. In a local Danish Newspaper, the priest writes: “What can be worst. To hang santa, or the burning of witches? When we see that parents allow children to watch on TV, Movies and multi media, this is like “Children-TV”, explained Knudsen.---

When the images of red and green, trees and bulbs of light, cartoon figurines of Santa and Christ dominate the day, it is hard to see the Christ element in Christmas. One need only tune in and turn on some seasonal songs and hear for yourself. They are filled with snowmen, reindeer, Santa, and snow. The classical, Christ-center tunes of O Magnum Mysterium and O Holy Night are being replaced with N’Sync Christmas and other such pop-love-and-lust centered takes on the season.

Nothing is wrong with enjoying some well-mannered Christmas frivolity. But one must ask themselves, what room have I left for Christ in my Christ

Is it overly cluttered with pleasure, presents, parties, and purchases? May we prepare Him room. ( Jonathan Keck)

ADDENDUM:
Thor was probably history’s most celebrated and worshipped pagan god. His widespread influence is particularly obvious in the fifth day of the week, which is named after him – Thursday (a.k.a. Thor’s Day).

It is ironic that Thor’s symbol was a hammer. A hammer is also the symbolic tool of the carpenter – Santa Claus. It is also worth mentioning that Thor’s helpers were elves and like Santa’s elves, Thor’s elves were skilled craftsman. It was the elves who created Thor’s magic hammer.

In the Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs, author Francis Weiser traces the origin of Santa to Thor: “Behind the name Santa Claus actually stands the figure of the pagan Germanic god Thor.” (Weiser, Francis X. Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs. New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1952, p. 113)

David Pescovitz:My post about Santa Claus's Fortean family tree reminded BB contributor Charles Platt of this delightful greeting card he made in 1994. Of course, as Charles points out, the Satan/Santa connection is no joke to some. Santa Claus: The Great Imposter

After listing some the common attributes of Thor and Santa, Weiser concludes: Here, [Thor] then, is the true origin of our “Santa Claus.” . . . With the Christian saint whose name he still bears, however, this Santa Claus has really nothing to do. (Weiser, Francis X. Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs. New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1952, p. 114)

Another interesting trait of Thor is recorded by H.R. Ellis Davidson in Scandinavian Mythology, “It was Thor who in the last days of heathenism was regarded as the chief antagonist of Christ.” (Davidson, H.R. Ellis. Scandinavian Mythology. New York: Peter Bedrick Books, 1982, p. 133) In case you are not aware, an “antagonist” is an enemy, adversary or replacement.

Tim Botron:Many people assume that the word "Santa" comes from the word "Saint" - as Saint Nicholas. But where does the "Claus" come from ? "The modern American Santa Claus is the result of a huge mess of practices and figures that have collided at high speed throughout the ages."

The bizarre and mutual attributes of Thor and Santa are no accident.

While the pagan brush strokes of Norse mythology has painted some of the traits of Santa Claus, there exists another brush stroke coloring Santa that bids our inspection.

There is a little-known piece in the life of Santa that time and tradition has silently erased. Few people are aware that for most of his life, St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas, Christkind, et. al.) had an unusual helper or companion. This mysterious sidekick had many names or aliases. He was known as Knecht Rupprecht; Pelznickle; Ru-Klas; Swarthy; Dark One; Dark Helper; Black Peter; Hans Trapp; Krampus; Grampus; Zwarte Piets; Furry Nicholas; Rough Nicholas; Schimmelreiter; Klapperbock; Julebuk; et. al.

---Then of course, there's the fact that SANTA is an anagram of SATAN. This can't be a coincidence, because Terry Watkins did a Google search for 'Satan Claus' and found "over 1,700 hits!" What about the Claus part, you ask? Well, that's either an anagram for Lucas (Lucifer's nickname among his frat buddies) or a sneaky way of writing "claws," and claws, of course, are way more evil than regular hands.---

Though his name changed, he was always there.

Some other well known titles given to St. Nick’s bizarre companion is a demon, evil one, the devil and Satan. One of his dark duties was to punish children and “gleefully drag them to hell.”

---German journalist and Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels (1897 - 1945) holds hands with his daughter Helga (1932 - 1945) as they stand on steps next to costumed participants, including one dressed as Santa Claus and another dressed as an angel, at the opening of the Christmas Market in the Lustgarten, Berlin, December 8, 1935.---
