Am not sure what exactly brought it on, but people would take thin, printed tissue paper, wrap any and every object they could find in it, and then shellac the heck out of it with podge, giving it a shiny finish. It was low-end home decoration. People would varnish their leaf collection with it, using it as a decoupage, and even their insect collection and so on. One these fads take off they have assume a life of their own, making their way into the girl guides, the 4-H clubs, the wolf cubs and so on, racing with popsicle sticks as to which of the two was the most kitsch. Eventually it crashed; as if one morning, colletively, America looked around their home and got disgusted with what they saw and dumped anything and everything that had been podged into posterity, only, of course to be replaced by something more aesthetic like say, rug hooking or macrame. Such is the way of the craft world and the tradition of the folk artisan expressing themselves in an urban society far removed from the Oregon Trail and the Last of the Mohicans.
