turn the cover off the ball

Chicago Cubs Scorecard, 1947
Illustration: (signed) “O. S.” for Otis Franklyn Shepard (1893-1969), art director of Wrigley Gum for 31 years. Designed the uniforms for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (as in A League of Their Own).

The St. Louis Cardinals at the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field (no date inscribed). The Cubbies were more than a bit overmatched when St. Louis could field a team with the likes of Red Schoendienst, Enos “Country” Slaughter, Stan “The Man” Musial, and a catcher named Joe Garagiola.

New York Yankees Scorecard, 1941

Philadelphia A’s at the New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium. Here’s another Harry M. Stevens-produced scorecard. Here, the A’s were in for it with a Yankees team that boasted Phil “The Scooter” Rizzuto, Bill Dickey (who seems to be the model for the cover graphic), Red Ruffing on the mound and a guy named “Joltin’” Joe DiMaggio in center field.

St. Louis Cardinals at the New York Giants, Polo Grounds (no date inscribed, but the former owner tipped-in the box score and news article—still no date!). These New York scorecards from 1941 are just beautiful. Sadly, no credits.
