communication arts

by Art Chantry:

the first issue of the legendary CA (communication arts magazine). i found this copy in a junk store (near mint condition) for a buck. believe it or not, it was put together up here in seattle by the coynes (who were apparently cornish grads, i guess). local legendary seattle illustrator irwin caplan (who, along with a coupeleof other guys started seattle first “graphic design” studio) filled the issue with little filler spot illos. even many of the ads have seattle connections. CA was also printed up here in seattle at craftsman press for 40 years. so, the seattle connections to this magazine are long and solid. but, nobody seems to know it. so sad.

—i’ve come to think that the term “graphic designer” doesn’t describe what we do any more. every tom, dick and harry who buys the software is a functioning ‘graphic designer’, now. i think we need to go back to the term “commercial artist” just to make some sort of distinction between the creative and the technician. that’s my two bits.—AC
