The young princess grew up amid this scandal determined to find a happiness of her own in a marriage to Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816.  This she did-but it was short lived, for within the first year Charlotte died in childbirth at the age of twenty-one. England was plunged into deep mourning and countless mementos flooded the land, such as this engraving, The Royal Rose by P.W. Tomkins, to be found in the British Museum. Had Charlotte lived, she would have reigned instead of Queen Victoria.
